No one is on property right now, except for me and the idle emergency crew. The phone does not ring.
So I have nothing for you, save for some self indulgent Sunday evening ramblings.
All 48 kids are being transformed into river snobs, who will forever look down upon “lake” people. Lakes are so straight forward. Windy or calm. Get from point A to point B. Dullsville.
The river requires far greater artistry. It throws things at you. Water levels change. Rocks come alive only to target your kids with their jagged enemas. Sometimes the current flows without much warning into an 80 foot waterfall, or a 20 footer. Both instill awe and fear equally. Every metre requires strategy. And sometimes, you have no choice but to haul ass around obstacles. More often than not, you are bold or ignorant enough to run whitewater clean and square. You crash hard at the end of the day.
And if you can face all this, lean on your team, forget all the garbage of the past and feel timeless in a majestic moment; then you feel immortal.
And folks, based on all-too brief messages that Sat-Phone birdies leave in my ears, your kids are feeling pretty immortal right now.
A bold claim. I go on record. You will see it in their faces upon their return, which is creeping upon us all too quickly.
Bold is back Thursday. They are seemingly gone forever. The Seniors back on Wednesday. I get to see them tomorrow night and can’t wait. The Samurai (Juniors), are back Tuesday. I have heard that they have been chirping the Freshman in a winner-take all-no-prisoners eco-challenge later this week. The freshmen will barely have time to recover, as they return from their SECOND canoe trip on Wednesday.
If you can’t keep all this straight – it doesn’t matter. Your kids are working hard and having the time of their lives.
Warm regards,
Steven
